The Cambridge Solution Murder Mystery is a specialized event that we invented. The event begins with our detective walking into the room and announcing that there has been a murder. Everyone in the room is going to help to solve the crime, and with their help, justice will be done. The detective reads the scenario to the audience and then introduces the characters to everyone. The characters are played by our actors.
Each group is provided with three sheets of paper and a pen. The first page is the scenario. The second is the list of characters with a short description of each. The third is the answer sheet, which may include some questions that could be therapeutic in nature. The group comes up with a team name and then goes about interrogating the suspects. Either each suspect goes to a group and they rotate during the event, or we place our suspects around the room and people come to them.
Towards the end of the event, we bring the suspects back on-stage and ask them a couple of funny questions. This is done for entertainment more than factual revelations. The revelations were provided as they spoke to the groups.
The detective will likely read several of the answers out loud and then confronts the murderer. The detective brings up the winning team and rewards them for their effort.
The objectives are to get people to work together as a team, to get them to give themselves an identity that symbolizes that cooperation and to get everyone to laugh together to reduce the barriers between individuals.
For winners and fun participants we bring small prizes. We don't want anyone to feel overly upset at not winning. The objective, after all, is to help with self esteem and a sense of camaraderie.
The idea is to help with skills development as the participants have to use cognitive efforts to examine the behavioral issues of our suspects. When we have them exhibit characteristics that reinforce the negative effects of certain learned behaviors, the event can be psychoeducational by helping participants to recognize certain traits and perceive them in a negative light.
