MIX AND MINGLE MURDER MYSTERY SHOWS TO ASSIST AND SUPPORT GROUP THERAPY

THEY improv provides Mix and Mingle Murder Mystery Therapy Shows to help support groups and other counseling activities. Everyone at the party plays a character and speaks with the others as both Detective and Suspect. With our Dartmouth Plan, the culprit is unaware. Our Director is listening to what is being said and we adjust the answer at the end to be what they said as opposed to what we wrote. This accomodates errors and helps build confidence through success. Each interview is followed by one with more and more comfort. At the end, the group also votes for the best performer.

MIX AND MINGLE MYSTERY SHOWS TO ASSIST AND SUPPORT GROUP THERAPY

ROLE PLAYING - ENTERTAINMENT - EDUCATION - EXPOSURE

The Dartmouth Plan Murder Mystery is something of our own creation to enable everyone to participate, to play characters using MASK WORK, and not be penalized if no one gets the correct answer at the end. After all, we're adjusting to what actually got said in the room. Rather than chastising failure, we applaud success. As this is a mix and mingle party, it generally is before or after a meal, during social time. Note: Often without cocktails.

MASK WORK
Participants may have been told ahead of time which character they will play, allowing them to more dress the part. This is what we refer to as mask work. It gives people a little more freedom to talk since they aren't being themselves for a moment. This means that they can overcome a lot of anxieties and let loose in ways that they would not normally consider. This makes them more comfortable and confident in future conversations when not wearing the mask as a tool. Of course, it is a character overlay, not usually an actual mask.

Ahead of time, we get them the first four pages of the mystery. This includes the Scenario, a list of the Characters, the Answer Sheet that they will fill out in the end so that they have a better understanding of the questions they may be asked, and a sheet explaining how the game is played. This is to give them more comfort for when they show up and allow them to bring costume pieces if they like.

Our host is a Director. This person walks them through the process, is secure and confident in their abilities and makes all of the problems of communicating seem much simpler and easier. More importantly, fun and doable!

There are a couple of funny questions that we have for them to answer in front of the group after they've already spoken to everyone in the group. The mix and mingle portion should give them a bit more comfort to do so. They get applause and laughter for their answers and group members are there to support one another.

People write their answers and our Detective sorts through the answers to determine the winners and count up the votes for best performer. For winners and fun participants we bring small prizes. We don't want anyone to feel overly upset at not winning. The objective, after all, is to help with self esteem and a sense of camaraderie.

Our Detective generally praises the group, normalizes the situation, thanks everyone and wishes them a goodnight.

The idea is to help with skills development as the participants have to use cognitive efforts to examine the behavioral issues of our suspects. When we have them exhibit characteristics that reinforce the negative effects of certain learned behaviors, the event can be psychoeducational by helping participants to recognize certain traits and perceive them in a negative light.

If you would like to talk about these shows and how they can help your group, we would love to hear from you. If you would prefer to find more information about other versions, such as using your people going table to table talking to everyone as suspects, or having everyone participate in more of a mix-and-mingle, feel free to use the navigation of the website to review our Cambridge Solutions and Dartmouth Plan mysteries.
